Image: FRC, the Institute for African American Studies, and the Department of Textiles, Merchandising, & Interiors collaborated in purchasing and distributing copies of Hood Feminism by Mikki Kendall for a socially distanced discussion around Lake Herrick. Chera Jo Watts and Sha'Mira Covington, the co-facilitators of the Book Club, lead the group with meditation and insightful questions that engaged deeper understanding of the work. The author, Mikki Kendall, is an activist, focusing her works around current events, media representation, and the history of the feminist movement. Her book, Hood Feminism, redefines feminist issues as the access to quality education, food security, safe neighborhoods, a living wage, and medical care, rather than the popular view of feminism only uplifting the privileged. Kendall engages her audience to critically assess modern day feminism, their participation of it, and redirect them to a feminist movement that encompasses women of all backgrounds, status, and situations.
