Originally from Silver Creek, Georgia, Ms. Chera Jo Watts and her family joined the Franklin Residential College (FRC) staff in July 2017. As the FRC Academic Advisor in Residence, Chera Jo serves as an academic resource for Franklin Residential College members and facilitates connections with the Franklin College of Arts & Sciences and broad university community. She and her family welcome FRC members in their Rutherford Hall apartment on a regular basis during the academic year.
Chera Jo’s experience at the university spans over 10 years in a variety of capacities. Having worked as a federal work study student worker, as well as paid undergraduate research assistant, she supported herself financially through college and graduated from UGA in 2010 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology. Prior to her current role in the DAE, Chera Jo worked as an academic advisor in the Franklin College of Arts & Sciences with students majoring in life sciences. Other professional experience includes working as a staff member for the lower division Office of Academic Advising and the Graduation Certification Office in the Franklin College of Arts & Sciences. Additionally, she has experience as a corporate recruiter in human resources for the Marriott Shoals Hotel & Spa in Florence, Alabama.
As a first generation college student and practitioner, Chera Jo especially enjoys working with students who are the first in their family to go to college. She communicates and collaborates regularly with a number of units on campus who support first generation students, underrepresented minority students, and non-traditional students. When not working, Chera Jo enjoys chasing around her son, reading, hiking, gardening, and any type of exercise. Her favorite author is Alice Walker. Chera Jo is a lifelong learner, so students may encounter her at a variety of seminars on campus across a wide range of topics. Beginning Fall 2019, Chera Jo is pursuing graduate school as a full time student and working as a Graduate Assistant in the Institute for African American Studies. Her Fall 2019 FRC Member Hours are on Monday afternoons from 3-4 PM in 231 Rutherford Hall. Current FRC members or prospective members who wish to meet with Chera Jo or ask questions should email firstname.lastname@example.org to set up an appointment.
